Centre, AL (January 2, 2026) – Authorities are investigating a deadly head-on crash that occurred on Thursday evening in Cherokee County and claimed two lives while injuring a teenager.

The collision happened on January 1 at approximately 5:45 p.m. Alabama time on Alabama Highway 9 near the 263-mile marker. The crash occurred about two miles north of Centre, according to officials.

Alabama State Troopers reported that a 2020 Chevrolet Traverse and a 2003 Ford Explorer collided head-on under circumstances still being reviewed. Emergency crews responded quickly after receiving reports of a serious crash in the area.

Jasmine D. Agan, age 26, of Cedar Bluff, was driving the Chevrolet Traverse at the time of the collision. Her passenger, Thomas D. Agan, age 25, of Temple, Georgia, was also inside the vehicle. Both suffered critical injuries in the crash.

Authorities confirmed that Jasmine Agan and Thomas Agan were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators stated that neither occupant of the Chevrolet was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.

The Ford Explorer was driven by a 16-year-old from Cedar Bluff. The teen suffered injuries in the crash and required emergency medical transport. A medical helicopter airlifted the injured driver to a local hospital for treatment.

Officials have not released details about the teen’s current condition. No additional injuries were reported at the scene.

Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency are continuing to investigate what led to the head-on collision.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of the deceased victims.

Fatal Car Accidents in Cherokee County

Fatal car accidents remain a serious issue across Cherokee County and throughout Alabama. Head-on collisions are especially dangerous because they often involve high speeds and direct impact. Even modern vehicles may not protect occupants when force is extreme.

Many fatal crashes occur on state highways like AL 9, where traffic moves quickly and lanes may lack physical separation. A single mistake, such as crossing the center line, can result in devastating consequences. Factors like distraction, fatigue, or failure to wear a seat belt can greatly increase injury severity.

Seat belt use continues to play a critical role in crash outcomes. Studies consistently show that occupants who are not restrained face a higher risk of fatal injuries. In serious collisions, seat belts can mean the difference between survival and tragedy.

For survivors and families, the emotional toll after a fatal accident can be overwhelming. Injured victims may face lengthy hospital stays, rehabilitation, and emotional trauma. Families who lose loved ones must cope with grief while handling unexpected financial pressures.

A wrongful death attorney can help families understand their legal options after a fatal crash. Legal professionals investigate the accident, review evidence, and determine whether negligence played a role. This process can help bring clarity and accountability.

Compensation in fatal crash cases may include medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, and loss of companionship. When a minor is injured, compensation may also address ongoing medical care and long-term needs. Each case depends on the specific facts involved.
