Lawrence Co, AL (April 28, 2025) – A fatal crash occurred early Monday morning, April 28, in Lawrence County, claiming the life of a young Athens resident. The deadly collision, reported by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), took place at approximately 7:15 a.m. along Alabama Highway 20 near the 45-mile marker, about one mile east of Town Creek.
According to ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division, 23-year-old Matthew L. Ebert of Athens was driving a 2012 Toyota Tacoma when his vehicle collided with a 2017 Freightliner tractor-trailer under circumstances that remain under investigation. The impact was severe, and both vehicles sustained significant damage.
Emergency medical services responded swiftly to the scene. Despite life-saving efforts, Ebert was pronounced dead at the site of the crash. The driver of the 18-wheeler sustained injuries and was transported by ambulance to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Local fire crews assisted in the extraction of the vehicles and managed fluid spills, while law enforcement directed traffic around the area for several hours until the roadway was cleared.
The ALEA Highway Patrol Division is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. No charges have been filed at this time.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Matthew L. Ebert during this difficult time.
