Bessemer, AL (April 22, 2024) – A fatal pedestrian crash occurred late on April 20, when a freight train hit and killed a 49-year-old man in Bessemer. The deadly incident took place at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Avenue A, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
Authorities reported that the victim, identified as Cedric Lamar Dean of Birmingham, was walking near the train tracks when he was hit by a passing freight train under circumstances that remain under investigation. First responders, including officers from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Bessemer Fire Department, and EMS personnel, were dispatched to the scene and found Dean with fatal injuries.
Emergency crews secured the area, redirected traffic, and attempted life-saving measures, but Dean was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was later transported by ambulance under the supervision of the coroner’s office. Officials are still working to determine how Dean came to be on the tracks at the time of the collision.
