Pedestrian Accidents in Mobile

In Alabama, pedestrian injuries and deaths caused by vehicle accidents have been increasing over the years. Data from early 2024 shows that pedestrian fatalities are up 12% compared to 2019 and have increased by 48% since 2014, even though the state’s population only grew by about 7%. Cities like Mobile are likely affected by this trend. Contributing factors include speeding, distracted driving, poor lighting, and a lack of safe infrastructure such as sidewalks and crosswalks. These conditions make it more dangerous for people walking near busy roads.

In Mobile, uneven sidewalk availability and unsafe pedestrian habits add to the risk of accidents. In some areas, pedestrians are often seen walking in the streets instead of on sidewalks, even where sidewalks exist. This increases the chance of accidents, especially on roads with heavy traffic or limited lighting. Improving infrastructure—such as adding well-maintained sidewalks, clearly marked crosswalks, and better street lighting—could help reduce pedestrian accidents and create a safer environment for everyone.
