Cleburne Co, AL (May 1, 2025) – A fatal crash occurred on Thursday afternoon in Cleburne County, resulting in the death of a Birmingham man. The collision took place around 12:55 p.m. on Interstate 20 near Heflin and involved a Ford Econoline van and a Kenworth tractor-trailer.
According to Alabama State Troopers, 38-year-old Demetrius J. McGhee of Birmingham was driving the van when, for reasons still under investigation, it collided with the rear of the tractor-trailer driven by 55-year-old Michael L. Simpson of Camden. The impact caused significant damage to the van and forced emergency personnel to respond swiftly to the scene.
McGhee was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Firefighters assisted in extracting McGhee from the vehicle, while troopers secured the crash site and redirected traffic. Simpson did not report any serious injuries and remained at the scene to cooperate with the investigation.
