Apr 19, 2025 | Local Accidents

Cullman, AL (April 19, 2025) – A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded on the waters of Lewis Smith Lake early Wednesday morning, April 16, during the second day of a national bass fishing competition. According to officials with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, two boats collided around 7 a.m., resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to others involved.

The incident occurred during the Tackle Warehouse Invitational, a Major League Fishing event drawing anglers and fans from across the country. Authorities say the crash involved a bass boat and a center console vessel. As the two boats came into contact, those on the center console bore the brunt of the collision’s force.

Three men aboard that vessel tragically lost their lives. They have been identified as 58-year-old Joey Broom of Altoona, 44-year-old John Clark of Cullman, and 62-year-old Jeffrey Little of Brandon, Mississippi. Other individuals involved in the crash were hurt and transported to local medical facilities for treatment. Emergency response teams remained on the lake for several hours as they secured the area and assisted with the investigation.

Major League Fishing issued a statement mourning the loss and expressing condolences to the families affected. Meanwhile, officials continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the three deceased vicitms. We also hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.

Boat Accidents in Alabama

Cullman, AL – Three Killed in Lewis Smith Lake Boat Crash During Fishing Tournament Boating accidents are unfortunately not rare in Alabama, especially during peak fishing and recreational seasons. In 2023 alone, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reported over 100 boating-related incidents, many involving collisions. With its extensive network of rivers and lakes, Alabama’s waterways see heavy traffic, particularly during tournaments and holidays.

Boating accidents can lead to a variety of serious injuries, often requiring long-term medical care and support. Below are some key factors surrounding these kinds of incidents:

  • Common Causes of Boat Accidents: Many boat crashes result from operator inattention, excessive speed, or unfamiliarity with local waterways. In competitive environments like fishing tournaments, these risks may increase due to tight schedules and heavy traffic.
  • Types of Injuries Sustained: Victims in boating accidents often suffer traumatic injuries, such as broken bones, head trauma, or spinal injuries. When a boat capsizes or passengers are thrown overboard, the risk of drowning or hypothermia rises.
  • Importance of Safety Equipment: Life jackets, radios, and navigational aids can be the difference between life and death. Alabama law mandates life vests for all children under the age of 8, but everyone on board should wear one.
  • Legal Rights After a Boat Crash: If someone else’s negligence caused the crash, victims or their families may have a right to seek financial compensation. These cases are often complex, involving maritime laws and liability determinations.
