DeKalb Co, AL (October 17, 2024) – A tragic four-vehicle crash occurred on Wednesday afternoon in DeKalb County, resulting in the death of one individual and injuries to five others. The incident, reported by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), took place at approximately 2:55 p.m. on Alabama 75 near DeKalb County 24, roughly five miles south of Geraldine.

According to Senior Trooper Brandon Bailey of ALEA, Tommy W. Gortney, 51, was driving a 2015 Kia Optima when it was struck by a 2015 Honda CR-V driven by Olivia G. Butler, 27, of Rainsville. Following the initial collision, the Kia then struck a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe, operated by Katheryn D. Lipscomb, 33, of Crossville, before also colliding with a 2019 Honda CR-V driven by Amanda F. Terry, 51, also from Rainsville.

Gortney was pronounced dead at the scene. Both Lipscomb and Terry sustained injuries and were transported to Marshall Medical Center for treatment. Additionally, Malinda B. Gortney, 50, a passenger in the Kia, was injured and taken to Huntsville Hospital. Two young passengers in the Chevrolet, a 5-year-old and a 1-year-old, were also injured and received care at a nearby hospital.

Emergency responders, including local fire departments, worked diligently to manage the scene, assisting with vehicle extraction and traffic control. Troopers from ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
