May 19, 2025 | Local Accidents

Elberta, AL (May 19, 2025) – A multi-vehicle collision claimed two lives and left two others injured on the afternoon of Friday, May 16, in the city of Elberta.

Around 1:25 p.m., emergency crews responded to a serious crash involving three vehicles on U.S. Highway 98 near the 70 mile marker. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the crash began when a 2020 Ford F-150, driven by 74-year-old Daniel E. Middleton of Foley, rear-ended a 2014 Buick Enclave. The Enclave was being driven by 89-year-old Johanna A. Martin of Lillian. Following the initial impact, Martin’s vehicle veered into the path of oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a 2010 Ford F-150, driven by 70-year-old Donald B. Childress of Gulf Shores.

Toni L. Robinson, 55, of Lillian, a passenger in the Enclave, died at the scene. Martin was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida, where she later died from her injuries. Both Middleton and Childress sustained injuries and were transported to South Baldwin Hospital for treatment.

Law enforcement closed off the area for several hours while investigating the scene and clearing the wreckage. The ALEA Highway Patrol Division is continuing to investigate the crash to determine all contributing factors.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the families of the deceased victims. We also hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
