Flat Rock, AL – Local Woman Killed in Two-Car Crash on AL-71

Flat Rock, AL (February 19, 2024) – On Friday, February 16, a local woman was killed after being involved in a two-vehicle collision in the Flat Rock area. The fatal crash occurred in Jackson County on AL-71 near mile marker 23 at around 2:50 p.m. It was reported that 77-year-old Lila F. Lay of Flat Rock was driving a 1998 Ford Ranger pickup truck when she collided with a 2007 Ford Expedition driven by 33-year-old Charles C. Baker also of Flat Rock. 

Lay suffered critical injuries and was transported to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She succumbed to her injuries and was later pronounced the following day on Saturday, February 17. No other injuries have been reported at this time. 

Emergency responders were present to provide aid to the involved parties. The area was temporarily closed until responding officials could remove the resulting wreckage and other debris. No additional information has been provided at this time. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the deadly crash is being handled by local law enforcement officials.
