Russell Co, AL – Head-On Crash on US 80 Claims Woman’s Life

Apr 3, 2025 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Russell Co., AL (April 3, 2025) – A car crash on the morning of March 31 ended in the loss of one life and left two others injured in Russell County.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) responded to a multi-vehicle collision that took place around 7:50 a.m. along U.S. Highway 80 near the 208 Mile Marker, approximately three miles west of Phenix City. Investigators say the collision involved a head-on impact between two vehicles, with a third vehicle struck in the chain of events.

Tonya R. McGraw, a 51-year-old woman from Phenix City, was driving a 2016 Hyundai Sonata when the vehicle collided head-on with a 2013 Ford F-350 pickup truck operated by 56-year-old William S. Slappy of Hamilton, Georgia. Before the head-on impact, the Ford had also struck a 2015 Honda Accord driven by Rodriguez E. Thomas, 34, of Fort Mitchell.

The force of the impact proved fatal for McGraw, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. Both Slappy and Thomas sustained injuries in the crash and were transported to Piedmont Midtown Medical Center for care. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed. The crash remains under investigation by ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Tonya McGraw.

We also hope those injured are able to recover in a timely and full manner.

Fatal Car Accidents in Alabama

Russell Co., AL – Head-On Crash on U.S. 80 Claims Woman’s Life Deadly car accidents continue to be a painful reality in Alabama. On average, more than 900 people lose their lives each year in crashes across the state. Many of these tragic events occur in rural areas or on highways like U.S. 80, where higher speeds increase the risk of serious outcomes.

There are many dangers that can contribute to fatal crashes. Here are several key factors that frequently play a role in deadly collisions:

  • Wrong-Way Driving: Head-on collisions often result from drivers traveling the wrong way, especially on highways or during lane changes. These incidents are often linked to impaired driving, fatigue, or distraction.
  • Speeding: Traveling above the speed limit reduces reaction time and worsens the severity of impact. High-speed crashes are far more likely to lead to catastrophic injuries or death.
  • Distraction Behind the Wheel: Texting, eating, or other distractions can cause drivers to drift into oncoming traffic or miss crucial cues, such as stop signs or changing road conditions.
  • Weather and Road Conditions: Poor visibility, rain-slicked roads, or curves in the roadway can contribute to fatal crashes, especially if drivers do not adjust their speed or behavior accordingly.
  • Failure to Yield or Misjudging Gaps: In intersections or two-lane roads, misjudging the distance and speed of oncoming vehicles can easily lead to deadly outcomes.
